Mission
MUI Core product family’s mission is to empower the creation of great design systems with React so developers can build UI faster and differentiate their products with a stronger UX.
It’s about creating great design abundance. We unlock design skills for the developers that have little while allowing them to build UIs fast. We make it easier for the product teams to create a holistic design system.
Vision
Our vision is to create the most robust foundations to build React design systems. "robust" is measured by how many developers decide to depend on it.
‣
Go to market (differentiators)
- Quality of execution.
Why? It’s all that matters in a crowded space.
- Design appeal.
Why? This is the single most important decision criterion when picking a UI library. Individual developers don’t have design skills, they turn themselves toward UI libraries to fill this skills gap. The product team understands that the design execution quality goes a long way toward improving the UX for end-users, and hence, important for them to get a hedge against their competitors.
- The simplicity of usage (API, documentation, customization).
Why? It's about saving time for experienced developers and about reducing the entry barrier for noobs.
- React only.
Why? The market for React developers is already big enough for us, we don’t need to be distracted with Vue, Svelte, etc.
Master plan (iterations of 5 years)
Part I (2015-2019)
- 2015: Pick a popular design trend and build a basic set of components (YOLO).
- Use the growth of adoption to incentive more contributions. Use the contributions to improve the core product and drive more adoption.
- 2017: Reach a critical market size to start generating revenue, ads, design kits, and templates. At this point, we can start to have contributors that stick around.
- 2019: Generate enough revenues to start supporting one person full-time. Invest the revenue into improving the open source components and paid advanced components.
Part II (2020-2024)
- 2020: Reach the full depth of the Material Design market. Start to realize adjacent use cases are growing.
- Start to work on the biggest adjacent pain points the community has: powerful customizations.
