No matrix organization

We believe everyone deserves to report to exactly one person who knows and understands what you do day-to-day. The benefit of having a technically competent manager is easily the largest positive influence on a typical worker’s level of job satisfaction. We have a simple functional hierarchy, everyone has one manager that is experienced in their subject matter. Matrix organizations are too hard to get right.

“Acting” andInterim”

In some cases, an individual may have an "Interim" or "Acting" title:

  1. Acting This means the individual is working on promotion into the role. The person is taking the role to see how it goes.
  2. Interim This means that the individual is occupying this role temporarily, to help the team. The person will move back to their original main role after some conditions, usually until an external hire is found.

In either case, they will be fulfilling the full responsibilities of the role. If you have any questions, about the future of the role, please ask them or their manager.

Making decisions

Accountable vs. Responsible

The responsibility vs. accountability roles difference comes down to effort vs. results:

For these responsibilities split to work, the person accountable needs to have the commitment once a decision is made from the people responsible of the work and the person accountable of the work at the parent level. See the “Disagree and commit” methodology for more details.
