The KPIs are the most important indicators of company performance:
Revenue đź”— (North Star KPI)
- Type: Lagging
- Why? This KPI correlates with “how much value we generate” factor “how much we are able to capture”.
Even if revenue is the North Star KPI, revenue is a tool to push the mission. It’s critical to remember that the mission of MUI is not about growing the revenues (or even generating financial outcomes for its owners, if we want to push the argument to the extreme, Tesla and SpaceX have never been about how to earn more money for Elon, the richest person on Earth but about achieving a mission, no matter the cost). Revenue is our North Star KPI because we need to counterbalance the natural tendencies of the dev tools space: capturing 0% of the value created. If you might worry that picking this North Star might lead to us abandoning the open-source community, fear not, the North Star KPI of MUI Core is precisely to grow it: assuming that, at the company level, we give them the team to do it, it should fly. The Nonprofit is also meant as a counterweight. Stewardship also sets limits for lines we don't want to cross.
